About Arequipa – Peru
Arequipa is the second most important city of the Republic of Peru. Its capital and most populated city is central Arequipa.
It is the fifth largest department – behind Loreto, Ucayali, Madre de Dios and Cuzco. It was founded on August 15, 1540.
Arequipa, is important for the commerce and the industry; tourism is also important in Arequipa. The mines is an important part of its economy, followed by the agriculture and the ports.
This beautiful city is built almost entirely on sillar, a kind of white volcanic stone. This is the reason why Arequipa is called the White City.
Beautiful beaches of Punta de Bombón, crystal clear water in Caleta Catarindo, Mollendo, Islay, Playa Chira, Camaná.El volcano Misti among others. The most visited places are the Colca valley and its deep Canyon with live cultures: the “Kawanas”, “Kollawas” and the “Ccaccatapay”, that still preserve ancient customs, the petroglyphs of Toro Muerto, the valley and canyon of Cotahuasi . Also, in the city is important the historical center with its famous monastery of Santa Catalina, founded in 1580.
