Puerto Maldonado is the capital of the Department of Madre de Dios, the city is quiet but it is one of the main commercial centers of the Peruvian Amazon
Officially it is denominated of Capital of the Biodiversity of Peru in merit to important registries of flora and fauna found in the forests of the department.
The native population of Madre de Dios is still relevant in this city the many ethnic groups are distributed to the banks of the rivers Tambo Pata and Madre de Dios.
The name of Puerto Maldonado is a tribute to the brave Peruvian explorer Faustino Maldonado, who toured the waters of the Madre de Dios River and recorded his name on the trunk of a huge tree at the confluence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers.
